Stargate Remake

30 May

A Stargate reboot/reimagining is in the works. The hope is that the remake will revitalize the franchise and be the start of a movie trilogy. The remake is being done by the original Stargate producer/director team of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The 1994 movie starred James Spader and Kurt Russell.

The reimaging by the original creative team is reminiscent of 2013’s Evil Dead remake that was produced by the original  director, Sam Raimi, and star, Bruce Campbell.

Videodrome

25 Aug

Universal Pictures has announced that they will be remaking David Cronenberg’s bizarre classic, Videodrome. Ehren Kruger who brought us forgettable movies such as Reindeer Games, Transformers 3 and The Brothers Grimm is working on the script. Music video director Adam Berg will helm the project.

The original Videodrome was released in 1983 and stars James Woods and Deborah Harry. Set in Toronto, the movie follows the CEO of a small television station who discovers a broadcast signal featuring extreme violence and torture. Slowly he unravels the mystery surrounding the signal, but loses touch with reality in a series weird and creepy hallucinations.

I’ve seen Videodrome and bizarre is the only word to describe it.  I have no particular attachment to the movie; however, it’s odd that Universal would trust an inexperienced director and a big budget screenwriter with rebooting a Cronenberg classic.

How do you think Cronenberg feels about the reboot?

A Remake Worth Seeing: The Evil Dead

2 May

Oh sweet baby Jesus, The Evil Dead is being remade.  I’m sure when you think of horror movie remakes you cringe.  I know we’re still trying to forget the latest Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies and The Amityville Horror, but this remake will be helmed by veterans of the genre.

Original The Evil Dead director, Sam Raimi, and The Evil Dead star, Bruce Campbell, will be producing the new version.  Campbell’s cheeky hero Ash will not be featured.  Apparently, the only similarities will be a group of teenagers go to a cabin in the woods and find The Book of Dead.  I bet you’re asking yourself, is there still going to be a tree rape scene?  We can only hope.

The script is being polished up by screenwriter Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body and Juno) and will be directed by Fede Alvarez.  Who is Fede Alvarez you ask? He’s not anyone yet as he’s only directed a short science fiction film in Uruguay, but if he’s been chosen for The Evil Dead remake he can’t be all that bad.

I’m excited to see this.  I don’t think it’ll be nearly as good as the original, but I want to see what they do with it.  Will the movie be a straight horror flick or more slapstick like Army of Darkness?  Who knows, but you can expect to see The Evil Dead remake in Summer 2013.

They Are Remaking What?

17 Feb

Have you noticed how many remakes and reboots are coming out in the next year or two?

I read on moviepilot.com that Judge Dredd is being remade.  This time Dredd will be played by Karl Urban (Bones from the newest Star Trek).  The  Judge Dredd movies are based on the British comic book that began in to late 1970s and the comics are known for being a bit grittier than the 1995 movie starring Stallone and Wesley Snipes.  From the remake stills, I get a feeling it’s going to be a good movie.  Karl Urban is finally being noticed and he’s a pretty decent actor.  The costuming is similar to that of the comic books and the characters seem well rounded.  All in all, I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Some other remakes that are coming out are:

– 21 Jump Street

– Daredevil

– Dune

– Total Recall

– G.I Joe

– Robocop

– The Warriors

– The Amazing Spiderman

-It

-The Man of Steel

– The Great Gatsby

Which movie do you think should actually be remade?
