Superhero Team-up

23 Jul

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder announced at San Diego Comic-Con that there will be another Superman movie and the Man of Steel will be joined by Batman. It’s the first time ever the pair will team-up on the big screen. For those who aren’t familiar with the Batman and Superman comic book/cartoon dynamic – the characters have similar morals, but rarely see eye to eye. The combination should be interesting and I think their relationship will resemble Iron Man and Captain America’s in Marvel’s Avengers.

Both Henry Cavill and Amy Adams will reprise their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. The big question now is who will play Batman? Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer was originally cast as Batman in the 2007 failed Justice League project and he’s in the running again for the role. The fan favorite is Joseph Gordon-Levitt who did a pretty awesome job in The Dark Knight Rises.  Some Screen Rant suggests are Richard Armitage or Luke Evans.

I think Gordon-Levitt is the best choice considering his role in the last Batman movie and even though Christopher Nolan isn’t directing the new Superman movies, he’s producing them.

Who else do you think would make a good Batman?

Guillermo is Great!

14 Nov

I’ve finally come to terms with what happened to Tim Burton. The real Tim is gone and the days of his dark, funny, quirky and sometimes depressing movies have vanished. I moved on with my life and started secretly obsessing over Robert Rodriguez. Planet Terror, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico were all horrible, yet magical in their own way. Then I read Rodriguez left his wife of 16 years and his five children for Rose McGowan. I’m not especially judgmental, but believe me I’m judging.

With both directors tainted, I moved on to the only logical choice – Guillermo del Toro.

What’s so great about Guillermo? Let me tell you:

1. He’s married to his high school sweetheart. That’s adorable and all the cool kids marry their high school boyfriend or girlfriend.

2. He owns a separate house for all his books, posters and movie memorabilia. Del Toro has said, “As a kid, I dreamed of having a house with secret passages and a room where it rained 24 hours a day. The point of being over 40 is to fulfill the desires you’ve been harboring since you were 7.” Agreed!

3. He’s an author (The Strain) and was a special effects make-up artist for 10 years.

4. He’s made some pretty dark and fun movies – Hellboy 1 & 2, Blade 2 and Pan’s Labyrinth.

5.  Last but not least, he’s in talks to do Justice League Dark.

Rumors have been circulating the internet for weeks that Guillermo will adapt and direct Justice League Dark a.k.a Heaven Sent. Now, Del Toro has acknowledged that yes, there are discussions about a Heaven Sent movie. The movie will feature DC’s supernatural heroes like Zatanna, John Constantine and Swamp Thing.

Guillermo directing would such a change from the popcorn Superhero movie and it makes me wonder what the rating will be.

If this ends up happening, everyday until the release date will fill me with unbearable excitement. For years, I have been telling people about my love for Man-Thing. Almost every time I try to educate someone on his greatness they say “Ewww he’s ugly” or “Who or what is Man-Thing?” What is Man-Thing? He’s awesome – that’s what he is.

It’s about time the weird and ugly superheroes get some exposure. I love my mainstream characters like Batman, but come on – how bad does he have it? Yes, your parents died and that’s tragic, but you’re still rich, brilliant and good looking.

Take a look at Man-Thing and Swamp Thing…still think Batman has a rough life?

X-Men Sequel: Days of Future Past

3 Aug

Producer Brian Singer confirmed that the sequel to X-Men: First Class will follow Marvel’s Days of Future Past storyline. Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men:First Class) will direct the sequel.

If you don’t know about Days of Future Past, here’s a little synopsis…

The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, giant robots or Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. She succeeds in her mission and returns to the future, but despite her success, the future timeline still exists as an alternative timeline rather than as the actual future. (The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005 gave the numerical designation of “Days of Future Past Earth as Earth-811).

Bryan Singer is excited and promises us a great movie.  Uh-huh, I heard that before and then audiences were given X-Men: The Last Stand.

Svetlana Khodchenkova in Wolverine 2

21 Jul

Last week, Jessica Biel dropped out of playing Viper/Madam Hydra in the new Wolverine movie. Biel’s departure created a bit of a problem considering Wolverine 2’s filming starts in less than a month.  On the bright side, fans didn’t seem particularly upset by the news.  Even though Biel would physically fit the role of Viper, her “acting” leaves something to be desired.

Fans tossed around some names for a new Viper that included Mila Kunis, Rooney Mara, and Kate Beckinsale. Surprisingly Marvel made a good decision and cast the virtually unknown Svetlana Khodchenkova. Svetlana’s only major American movie role to date was as Irina in Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy.

With the casting of Svetlana Khodchenkova and Will Yun Lee as Kenuichio Harada/The Silver Samurai, I’m starting to think that Wolverine 2 might not suck.

My biggest worry is director James Mangold who is pretty hit (3:10 to Yuma, Girl Interrupted) or miss (Kate and Leopold, Identity).

Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Thor 2 & Mads Mikkelesen

28 May

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to with Disney and Marvel to play the villain in Thor 2.  You may not recognize his name, but you’ve definitely seen Mikkelsen before: crying blood as Le Chiffe in Casino Royale and fighting against the gods as Draco in 2010’s Clash of the Titans.  Since Marvel’s trying to keep the role under wraps, it’s unclear what villain Mikkelsen will play at this point.  Cross your fingers and hope that he’ll be playing Mephisto!

Though Mikkelsen has chosen some pretty cheesy American roles, he’s well-known throughout Europe as a serious dramatic actor. Check out his work in Pusher, Pusher 2Prague and After the Wedding.
