Universal Pictures has announced that they will be remaking David Cronenberg’s bizarre classic, Videodrome. Ehren Kruger who brought us forgettable movies such as Reindeer Games, Transformers 3 and The Brothers Grimm is working on the script. Music video director Adam Berg will helm the project.

The original Videodrome was released in 1983 and stars James Woods and Deborah Harry. Set in Toronto, the movie follows the CEO of a small television station who discovers a broadcast signal featuring extreme violence and torture. Slowly he unravels the mystery surrounding the signal, but loses touch with reality in a series weird and creepy hallucinations.

I’ve seen Videodrome and bizarre is the only word to describe it.  I have no particular attachment to the movie; however, it’s odd that Universal would trust an inexperienced director and a big budget screenwriter with rebooting a Cronenberg classic.

How do you think Cronenberg feels about the reboot?

I think he is gutted, what’s the point to this? Well, at least it’s not as bad as re-making ‘American Psycho’ – next thing we know they are going to remake ‘Gone with the Wind’. Crazy.

I’m so sick of prequels, sequels, remakes and reboots. There’s only a couple I’m looking forward to and it’s only because they are sci-fi movies and so much more can be done now with special effects and make-up now. My heart nearly stopped when I heard they’re trying to remake Rocky Horror Picture Show. Why? Who would ever be a better Dr. Frank-N-Furter than Tim Curry?

Hollywood likes to recycle crap or put out crap rather than trying to find unique cool scripts. There are tonnes of writers out there with awesome scripts they can’t get anyone e in Hollywood to look at. Sad state of affairs my friends.
