Fifty Shades of Grey

26 May

In the last few weeks, there’s been a lot of hulabaloo surrounding Fifty Shades of Grey.  Universal Studios and Focus Features recently acquired the film rights and there’s been speculation about who should play the lead characters.  Fifty Shades of Grey is an erotic novel that began as Twilight fan fiction and was later published by Knopf Doubleday.  The novel’s protagonist is Anastasia Steele, a shy sexually inexperienced college graduate who begins a BDSM relationship with Christian Grey, a billionaire business man.

Some of the actresses considered to play Anastasia Steele are Kristen Stewart, Allison Williams, Alexis Bledel and Emilia Clarke.  Christian Grey could be played by Chris Pine, Alexander Skarsgard, Chase Crawford, Ian Somerhalder or John Hamm.

Considering all the parodies, articles and debate over the book, I decided to actually read it.  I’m half way through and I have to say I’m amazed that a studio would waste their time and money on bidding for the rights.  The book is explicit, but not really that shocking.  It lacks charm and the characters are one-dimensional.  Knowing that there are two more Grey books out there makes me cringe.

At the same time I want Fifty Shades to be a movie because I’m curious who will play the lead characters and how a director will handle the content.  Will a director go for a Hard R or will they try to tame the filth?  Ian Somerhalder seems to be the front-runner for playing Christian Grey.  I love Ian Somerhalder and if he gets the role I will go see Fifty Shades, even though I might be traumatized by all the things he has to do.

If you haven’t heard anything about the book, check out the below link.

Keep in mind that the content is explicit
